A Safe Workplace: HR's most valuable resource
In this session, Stefan will bring his active and engaging presentation approach to a core set of principles that create a stable and safe workplace. Participants will receive a wealth of proven strategic and tactical practices that have been applied by districts to reduce the risks of workplace stress, violence, and personal injury. Importantly, Stefan will share preventative practices that can be implemented "upstream" at minimal cost. Attendees of this two-and-a-half hours presentation will journey through the following topics:
- Establishing/Improving your TAT (Threat Assessment Team)
- Preparing for a "High Risk Employment Termination(s)"
- New sources of "Under The Influence" actions
- What are the four (4) most common sources of Workplace Violence?
- Multiple recommendations for emergency communications .... that are FREE!
- Multiple 3-5 minute "time critical" scenarios will be offered for the participants to solve.
- Security Assessments. What should be covered, documented, archived and how?
- ERP (Emergency Response Plans) content and making them a "living" document.
- Dealing with the "Media"
- How do I get my manager(s) or board to accept the potential to risk?

Stefan V. Salmonson, is the president of PROtective Services, Inc. He is a licensed deputy sheriff/tactical trainer, licensed private detective, licensed protective agent, certified personal protection specialist (Body Guard), international security consultant, experienced weapons and operational specialist, contract government investigator (with security clearance), airline transport pilot and professional speaker. PROS provides executive and personal protection services, high-risk employment termination support services, discrete investigations, security presentations, training, keynote presentations, security assessments, consulting and risk management recommendations for several hundred clients.
Stefan writes security related articles for publications and is frequently interviewed by journalists regarding security concerns. 2017 Minnnesota Teacher of the Year
Westonka Public Schools Teacher
Corey Bulman was selected from 132 candidates, 27 semifinalists, and 11 finalists to receive the 2017 Minnesota Teacher of the Year award from Education Minnesota.
Bulman, who has been a language arts teacher at Mound Westonka High School in Mound, MN since earning his teaching license 17 years ago, was inspired by his high school teachers to reach his potential after years as a struggling student. He wrote in his Teacher of the Year portfolio, "This educational experience taught me an important lesson: education is a gift that is renewed every time it is shared. This fact has driven me to give to others what I was so graciously given all those years ago."

Legal Update - Hot Topics in School Law
This presentation will cover three (3) topics:
- a public employee's constitutional due process rights and the manner in which those rights are addressed;
- the legal pros and cons regarding a school district's right to require current employees to under a criminal background check in addition to background checks required by Minn. Stat. § 123B.03; and
- update of case law, arbitrations and changes to the law affecting school districts.

Jim Martin began practicing employment and labor law in 1989 where he has focused on all areas of employment and labor law. He has represented both private and public sector clients in a variety of matters and serves as general counsel for clients seeking to ensure compliance with employment and labor law including drafting policies and employee handbooks and providing training on the full range of employment and labor topics. In addition, Jim serves as a hearing officer in termination cases under the Veterans Preference Act and student expulsion matters under the Minnesota Pupil Fair Dismissal Act. Jim has extensive experience conducting investigations of employee misconduct. Jim also has extensive experience in public sector employment and labor law gained through his seven years as Executive Director of Human Resources with the Bloomington, MN, Public Schools and five years as Director of Human Resources with the St. Louis Park, MN, Public Schools. Prior to his work in the schools, Jim spent five years representing public and private sector clients on a wide range of employment and labor law issues with a large Twin Cities firm. Jim and his family live in Eden Prairie and he is active in youth coaching as well as numerous civic activities.
